Uncle charged with infant’s rape and murder

The uncle of two-year-old Casey Leigh Mullen was charged today with her rape and murder.

Michael Patrick Mullen, 21, was arrested after the toddler was found in a pool of blood at her home in Gipton, Leeds, on Sunday night. He will appear before magistrates in Leeds tomorrow.

“Police have now charged a 21-year-old male with murder and rape and he has been detained to appear at Leeds magistrates court tomorrow,” a West Yorkshire police spokesman said.

A post-mortem examination revealed the two-year-old died from “compression of the neck”, police confirmed earlier.

Casey was discovered by her mother, Samantha Canham, 21, at their home at around 9.30pm on Sunday.

The child lived in a rented house with her older brother Darren, aged three, her mother and her 20-year-old father, David Mullen.

Two other men who had been arrested in connection with the murder, aged 19 and 20, were released without charge yesterday.

It is understood Casey’s parents had moved into the house around eight months ago. Neighbours said they called Casey “Smiley” because she was such a friendly and happy child.

Try to tell me she was asking for it, that little Lolita- go on!

What people don’t realise about rape is that it isn’t fair. I know that sounds stupid but it’s true. We like to believe we live in a just world. That’s why we think that rape victims must have somehow asked for it – because it means that if someone asks for it, we can somehow not ask for it and be safe. Well, we’re not safe. We never are. Not from the second you are born. The second a girl is born she becomes a target for the simple fact of having a cunt and that is all. It’s not fair.

People don’t realise that when talking about child porn, it isn’t always “provocative”, early-matured teenagers. There is plenty of porn out there showing eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two and younger children being raped, abused, violated, beating and destroyed. Watching those horrors should be illegal and subject to imprisonment by itself. It is accomplice to rape, accomplice to the murder of this wonderful little girl. I’ll bet you anything that the uncle, a seemingly nice guy, was one of the millions who watches child porn.

Her uncle. These are the men bringing up and killing the hearts, minds and bodies of our children.

You can tell a society by how it treats it’s least empowered members. We enjoy watching our children raped.

There is no fair world. There is no security and no justice in this world. Not for any woman whether two or on her death bed. It is only in death that there is any semblance of peace, release from the vigilance and fear we face daily.

On a completely personal level I somewhat envy Casey. She’ll never grow up, true. But she’ll no longer be afraid the way I am. You see, child rape is so common the only uncommon thing about this is that she was murdered. And that statement is what is truly remarkable.

I’m a Christian feminist and I centre my views around the belief that all are made in God’s image and granted free will and autonomy. To deny that to the least of these, is to deny the holy imprint of God in them. I do not wish to force these beliefs on anyone.

I believe in an afterlife and I believe that Casey’s troubles are over. She’s been removed from this crap world before she’s ever understood it and in a way that’s a twisted blessing. Her family’s troubles are just beginning however and I pray for them.

So, Dear Smiley Casey,

I don’t know you, but I know plenty of little girls just like you and for what it’s worth I love you. I love the fact that you have brought so much happiness to those who love you, and I love you because I believe you to be made in God’s image.

I’m so sorry that you’ve suffered so much. I’m sorry that you’ll never experience so much. I’m sorry that you died abused, confused and scared. I’m sorry that one who claimed to love you clearly didn’t. I’m crying for you and longing to help create a world where no one will go through what you did.

Dear, dear Casey,

Happy Valentine’s Day.

Newt, I too was sickened when I read this story in the paper yesterday. ‘Sickened’ really isn’t a strong enough word, because my feelings contained anger, injustice, wishes for vengence and a whole host of other emotions.

You are right, the ‘unusual’ element of the story was that she was murdered (AFTER being raped). I think it is something like 20% of children that have been abused. And it’s almost always someone they know and should be trustworthy (fathers, uncles, brothers, cousins, family friend). Wonder if you can pick the common thread in that list? Yup. Male. It is no exaggeration to say that most (near all) sexual abuse of children (and indeed of teens and adults) are MALE.

What I do notice is a trend for them being younger and younger. Even babies. Yes, babies (6mo old). WTF? These sick fucks (the rapists of course) need to be terminated here and now. I am personally happy to do it.

You are also right that women have to have this fear of rape from cradle to grave, even elderly women of 80s and 90s get raped. Again, WTF? I could not believe, from the porn-spam I received at my old blog, that ‘grannie porn’ was ‘not uncommon’. Yes, sure, the most common porn spammed was ‘rape porn’ and ‘real rape porn’, but there was a hell of a lot of ‘incest’, ‘teens’ etc. Plus of course, the obligatory racist element so, so common in porn.

As female, our other ‘choices’, apart from being raped as a child, teenager, woman or old woman, is to be beaten, or paid c75% of what a male is paid for the same job.

Backlash much?

You made a good point that some people want rape victims to have been “asking for it” because it makes it seem less random and scary. I think women with this attitude – well-she-shouldn’t-have-been-drinking/wearing that etc – are unconsciously trying to feel safer. Having said that, I do wish they would stop saying it.

tcupnewt says:

I think it’s called the just-world hypothesis.

We always have to attribute a reason for pain and suffering. “Evil” just seems too random and frightening… Realising that helped me understand where a lot of victim blaming comes from. And I agree – still doesn’t stop me from getting mightily annoyed when people do it.

tcupnewt says:

Stormy- I agree with your sentiments. Maybe it’s naive of me, but I keep hoping that if people actually knew what the hell is in porn they would agree that something needs to be done. I don’t actually raise my hopes that anyone would bother to do anything more than pontificate though… After all there are thousands of children dying every day from preventable diseases and conditions in Africa and we kindly sit back. Women are always at the back of the help list anyway.

It’s absolutely ludicrous the way half the population is brought up in fear and actively haunted by it; even more ludicrous is the way we see this as the natural order of things. I can’t seem to get over the way we always instil this so young; Even worse, the way it’s actually justified! If there ever was more effective terrorism than that perpetrated by white men on those around them I have yet to find it.

However, that is really discounting the violence and sexual violence that WOC experience at the hands of both MOC and/or white men.

tcupnewt says:

Yes, I was thinking of the experiences of WOC, but thanks for calling me out on that.

hey.. i just came around ur website while i was browsing around on google.

i agree with you 100% if not 120%. its totally unfair. the question is, why do ppl rape? i think its just that lust that builds up inside of them, but with natural hormones and stuff, i think that’s quite normal. what needs to be addressed is the control inside ppl. I feel like ppl need to understand what is RIGHT and what is WRONG. having a sexual desire is quite normal, but knowing what is right and what is wrong is really important. for one, i think rape is WRONG on any level. it leaves the victim confused, frustrated, and closed and it DOESN’T help the perpetrator ONE BIT!

i really wish that all rape in the world could cease to ever exist. like my teacher said, “rape is the most terrifying thing in the world.”

Let’s hope to keep on doing good and hope that we can influence others with peace. As lame as that may sound, I think it sounds pretty awesome next to r***.
